Creating World Transforming Communities of Faith

People of Constant Prayer

January 11, 2018

Lord, in your mercy we pray for:

·         The world and all people, especially the poor, the homeless, the hungry, the war-torn, the nations and their leaders and all their peoples. Turn our hearts toward one another for the sake of Christ’s peace.

·         A certain blessing and courage to be the people of Christ’s body, the church, in all times and places sharing the light and healing only you can bring, O Christ.

·         A new year of spiritual giving in response to your never-failing love in Jesus Christ in our prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness locally and in the world through our United Methodist Connectional giving.

·         Rev. Michael and Rachel Slininger celebrating the completion of the adoption of their son, Owen!

·         The people and communities who have been devastated by wild fires, extreme cold, rain, snow, and ice; for the lives lost and the damage to property and the soul. Give us ways to bring comfort and healing as well as ways to care for the goodness of your creation.

·         Those who are recovering from accident, injury, illness, surgery and/or dealing with chronic conditions:

o   Rev. Margaret Aiseayew (Radcliffe St. John’s and Ellsworth UMCs) who fell and broke her leg before Christmas.

o   Marvin Davis, Sr. (Mitzi Schoening’s father, Rev. Dale Schoening Duncombe, Woolstock UMCs);

o   Rev. Dawn Freese (Manson, Pomroy Our Savior UMC) recovering from surgery to repair her broken ankle;

o   Ema Borholtz (Rev. Alaire Willits’ daughter-in-law) who was diagnosed with breast cancer;

o   Rev. Leila Blackburn and Jeff Leden (Belmond UMC) for Jeff’s treatment for macular degeneration;

o   Rev. Connie and Randy Thayer (Goldfield UMC) both recovering from back surgery and for Connie’s diagnosis of corticobasal degeneration;

o   Rev. Gina and Alan Spohnheimer (Loring UMC) as Gina continues to recover from heart bypass surgery;

o   Rev. Steve and Cindy Campbell (Ames Calvary UMC) for Cindy’s recovery from thyroid surgery, December 27, at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames;

o   Rev. Harlan and Deb Gillespie as he recovers from a heart ablation at Mercy West Lakes, West Des Moines, on Jan 8;

o   and Rev. Jim and Myra Gochenouer as Myra recovers from back surgery at Des Moines Mercy Medical Center on Jan 10.

·         Those who are grieving the loss of a loved one: Rev. Henrietta Klarenbeek and Michael Coveyou and their family on the death of her mother, Jo; Rev. Steve and Janet Hansen and their family on the death of Janet’s mother, Grace Rich; Rev. Lana and Jon Williams and daughter Reba on the death of their son and her brother, Hunter.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayers.

We apologize, if we have missed anyone. Please contact us with your joys and concerns emailing or calling NCD Administrative Assistant Alanna Warren at alanna.warren@iaumc.org, or NCD Superintendent Harlan Gillespie at harlan.gillespie@iaumc.org.

Equipping Ourselves and others as Transformational Leaders

Early Date Set for NC District Conference

It has been a tradition for district conferences to be set in late April or May and be held in conjunction with the Pre-Conference Session to Annual Conference. Late April and May are filled with many community, local church activities, and the work of preparing fields for planting in a largely rural district.

We are trying something new for this year’s scheduling of our district conference to free up some time during the busy end of spring time and being mindful of the timing of Lent and Easter. So . . .

The North Central District Conference will be held 9:30 to 11:30 am, Saturday, March 17, at the Webster City Faith United Methodist Church, 2020 Superior Street, Webster City.

This year’s conference will act on 2018-2019 nominations, receive reports, celebrate ministries and persons who are making a difference for Jesus Christ in their local communities and/or around the world.

Laity who are elected chairpersons, lay members to Annual Conference, UMW and UMM leaders of their local churches, elected leaders for district and conference committees, boards, and agencies, and all active and retired pastors and pastors on leaves of absence are encouraged to attend the district conference with voice and vote.

The Pre-Conference Session will be held Sunday, May 6, 2:30 to 5:00 pm at the Webster City Asbury United Methodist Church, 921 Des Moines Street, Webster City. The focus of this gathering is the presentation and conversation about the upcoming Iowa Annual Conference.

Equipping Ourselves and others as Transformational Leaders

Building a Church Leadership Connection Event – February 10, 2018 (Snow Date February 17)

Leadership training is more than gaining some information to help us be better spiritual leaders. It’s also about connecting with one another, sharing our best practices, and learning from each other as neighboring pastors and laypersons.

It’s about listening to one another, knowing each other well enough so we can resource each other as well as being resource by District and Conference leaders.

At this event, we will focus on working as healthy teams in local churches to make a difference in our churches, communities, and the world.

Building a church leadership connection with each other is essential for sharing information, best practices, and growing as disciples who facilitate an environment for disciple making by the Spirit.

Thanksgiving Ingathering Hunger Funds Grant Applications Available

As part of the Thanksgiving Ingathering held each year on the first Saturday of November, United Methodists gather at the five sites across Iowa to collect cash, kits, quilts for auction, and other items for missions in Iowa and across the world.  A portion of the resulting and undesignated funds (income from quilts, for example) is returned to the eight districts to disburse as grants to combat hunger in our local communities.  There is a modest sum of money available for use in the North Central District.

If your church is involved with a hunger project, you may apply for a portion of the available funds for that hunger-related project (such as a food pantry, sharing garden, or meal program).  Remember, all money must be used for food or hunger-related programs.  Please pass this notice along to anyone who might be interested in applying for these funds.  The deadline for application is February 15, 2018.  Funds will be distributed by the end of March.

To apply , please click here for the application.
